SUMMARY:ELBOW LAKE - Full moon/partial eclipse - no headlamps
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI ended up with last minute Kanananaskis camping reservations for the week of this hike and it’s my first time camping this summer. So\, rather than driving back into the city\, I’m moving this hike to Elbow Lake. We’ll hike up to the hike\, around the lake\, have a campfire (if no ban)\, and enjoy the full moon in the mountains. Hot dogs\, marshmallows\, and roasting sticks recommended. I’ll bring firestarter\, kindling\, and matches. Please try to leave your headlamps in your bag and hike with the light of the moon. Please update your availability. Meet at the Elbow trailhead parking. Arrange carpooling\, if you like. \nI intend to post a Glenbow Ranch evening hike once a month throughout the year\, (weather and health of the organizer dependent). It will serve multiple purposes. During the winter months\, we will hike as a close group\, to enjoy the sunset and the rise of the full moon. This hike will also keep us in shape when we can’t get to the mountains\, and will allow me to get to know new to me hikers before I take them to the mountains. I have started limiting my challenging mountain hikes to people I have hiked with before. This is due to super fast hikers signing up and running ahead of the group\, super slow hikers signing up and making the group wait for them and a few hikers who can’t seem to get along with anyone or follow the rules\, making it an uncomfortable hike for everyone. \nSo! I’m posting a Thursday evening hike at Glenbow Ranch for everyone. Beginners\nand experienced hikers welcome. Regardless of your speed and experience\, I expect you to show up prepared\, get along with others\, and hike at the pace of the group. No running ahead or asking to change the route. I will try to post this once a month. In the winter months\, I will post it on the evening of a full moon\, so we can hike under the stars (no headlamps). \nThere will be a minimum of four and maximum of 12 hikers. \nThe route will vary month to month\, but it may be on pavement\, dirt trails\, open\, and treed\, flat\, and with some hills. We will hike for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours (7pm-9pm or 10pm). Between 5 and 11km with some elevation gain\, especially near the end. \nFor August\, we will do the Glenbow Bow River Loop. We go down the main hill and close to the Bow river. Beautiful views\, with open paved or gravel paths. 10.5km and 182m of elevation gain\, mostly right at the end. It will take as long as it takes\, based on the group that we have (maximum 3 hours). \nIf you are new to me\, participation in this hike will help me evaluate if you are a good fit for the group to join my mountain hikes (not too fast or slow\, cooperate with the group\, follow directions\, no running ahead\, etc.). \nA waiting list has automatically been created to determine this trip’s suitability for you as a potential participant. The organizers will be checking your hike history to determine your ability to complete this trip. If the organizer deems it necessary to obtain additional information from you\, please provide it\, otherwise\, you will remain on the waiting list. \nAndy Bell’s German Shepherd\, Jasmine\, will likely be on this hike\, on a leash at all times. She is an experienced hiker and does not chase pikas\, marmots\, deer or bears. She is very friendly. Unfortunately\, no other dogs allowed on the hike. \nBackpack must include 2 liters of water\, first aid kit\, medications\, toilet kit\, snacks\, and layers for all weather conditions. Good hiking books are required. Poles are optional. A positive attitude\, love of nature\, and sense of humour are also recommended. 🙃 \nBearspray is recommended. We will hike without headlamps\, but you may bring one in your backpack. Please bring a backpack and proper hiking footwear. \nAll participants are expected to read the Slow and Steady Waiver and Code of Conduct. You must sign the waiver at the trailhead to participate. You will need the name and phone number of an emergency contact.

SUMMARY:LOCATION CHANGE - MOUNT LIPSETT - Slow to Relaxed Pace
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nLOCATION CHANGE: \nMOUNT LIPSETT \nDUE TO THE CHANGE OF LOCATION\, I WILL COME BACK INTO WIFI (VISITOR CENTRE) AT 7PM THIS EVENING TO SEE WHO IS ATTENDING AND TO MOVE NEW PEOPLE FROM THE WAITLIST TO GOING. AT 8PM THIS EVENING\, ALL RSVP’S ARE FINAL. \nLittle Lawson has a wash out and is closed with construction vehicles for the next month\, so we have moved the hike. \nWe are now doing Mount Lipsett. This is a beautiful hike through the trees and flowers\, to some switch backs in the sub alpine\, and then a good climb up to a gorgeous 360 mountain view. After lunch\, we return the same way. There may be some mud and water at the beginning due to recent rains. \nThis is a wonderful hike\, but not suited for beginners. There is quite a bit of elevation gain and it is a long day out. We will be going at a slow pace on the steep uphill\, and a relaxed pace the rest of the time. \nPlease note\, I lead group hikes and no one is left behind. If you are a strong hiker\, you must still stay with the group\, in sight of me at all times. The fast hikers can always slow down\, the hikers at the back may not be able to hike faster. If you are too fast\, you will be asked to hike at the back and help the other hikers. We are out for the day to enjoy nature. It is not a race. Positive attitude and willingness to work wit a group is required. \nDistance: 14.5km return\nElevation: 719m \nWe will meet in the Mount Lipsett paved parking lot at 9:00am. Then\, we will drive together to the unmarked\, gravel trailhead. I will be camping in Kananaskis\, so you will have to arrange your own carpooling from Calgary. Please don’t be late\, without cell service\, it is frustrating for everyone to be waiting at the trailhead. \nDue to bears\, a minimum of four participants is mandatory for the hike to go ahead. We will hike with light occassional rain and light smoke. Hike will be cancelled by 6pm the evening before if it will rain all day\, severe thunderstorms with lightning\, heavy smoke (over 9)\, there is a new bear closure\, or in event of the organizer illness or family emergency. I will have my friendly\, well trained\, German Shepherd on a leash at all times. No other dogs\, guests\, or children please. \nIt is very important to me that everyone hikes together as a group\, you can always see the leader\, and no one runs ahead\, even for the last few km’s. No exceptions. If you run ahead\, you will not hike with me again. We are out for a group hike. This gives us safety in numbers and a chance to hike with other likeminded individuals. If you like to hike solo\, or run far ahead\, please don’t join a group hike. Strong hikers\, do not pressure the slower hikers to go faster than they are comfortable. \nOn my hikes\, we take 4-12 experienced hikers. We do not run ahead or leave people behind. We are out to enjoy nature together\, get to know each other better\, and keep each other safe. If you run ahead of the group\, we will feed you to the bears. \nYou choose to make your own carpooling plans once you are accepted on the hike. Recommended $25 gas fee. I recommend meeting at Shouldice Park and Ride or Petro Canada at hwy 22 and 1. Please plan your pickup times accordingly to arrive by 9am. \nBear spray\, good hiking boots\, backpack\, lunch\, and 2L of water are mandatory. Poles are optional\, but recommended. Lunch\, snacks\, poles\, changes of clothes\, medications\, strongly recommended. First aid kit\, tensor bandage\, and emergency silver blanket\, and headlamp with new batteries are recommended in case things don’t go to plan. Extra socks and plastic bags for your boots are also useful. A water bladder you can drink while you hike\, plus a backup water bottle is ideal. \nYou will sign in on paper at the hike showing you agree to the waiver. Please have an emergency contact name and number ready to add to the sign in sheet. \nPlease read the slow and steady waiver and code of conduct in advance. You will sign in agreeing to the conditions of the waiver at the trailhead and leave an emergency contact name and number. You agree to follow slow and steady policies\, listen to the organizer\, treat everyone with respect\, do your own research on the hikes\, come prepared\, and recognize that your organizers are volunteers who put in a lot of their own time to plan and lead these hikes for you.

SUMMARY:Rock Isle lake and Sunshine Meadows or Citadel Pass
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**Vladdy says**: Being unable for the time being to bash up steep terrain I am relegated to gentler grades. \nI will give two (2) options\, both are about 18 km total\, but one is $80 more expensive: \nOption 1: From the Sunshine Gondola parking lot walk up to the village and then do the Sunshine Meadows loop. It is free and definitely pretty. Elevation gains ~650 m \nOption 2: Pay $80 for the gondola and hike to Citadel Pass and back. Elevation gains ~500 m in rolling terrain of superb alpine beauty. \nWeather will be partly cloudy and seems smoke free. \nMeet at Sirocco Station at 8:00 \n$20 fuel contribution to your driver is encouraged. \nBring the following: \nhiking poles\nsufficient clothes\nsufficient food\nbear spray\nsturdy hiking shoes\n2 L of water\nraingear\nFirst-aid kit\, any medications you may need \nCode of Conduct: By signing up for this hike\, you agree to abide by the rules and regulations outlined in the code of conduct. https://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/CODE_OF_CONDUCT \nWaiver: You must sign our club waiver before you are allowed to go on this trip. You will need to provide an emergency name and phone number. https://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/ \nDisclaimer: You are fully aware that your organizers are volunteers and not trained guides and you assume all responsibility for your own safety and well-being. SUMMARY:Upper Kananaskis full lake loop (mostly) - Relaxed Pace
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nEvery summer\, I love to do the full lake loop around Upper Kananaskis Lake. It is a long trip\, but not a lot of elevation\, with beautiful views of the lake\, the forest\, Point Campground\, Hidden Lake\, waterfalls\, and more. \nIt is a long day with a lot of distance and some rough footing. You must have hiked with me a least once before (brought proper gear\, showed you stay with the group\, got along with the group) and you must not have evening plans or rush the group. We are out for the full day. \nUsually\, I do the entire loop\, including Hidden Lake\, for about 23km. The section between North Interlakes parking and Upper Kananaskis Day Use parking has been closed all summer due to bears\, so we will do the slightly shorter loop. You get lucky\, because we lose some km’s (although I’m disappointed). 😂 \nSo\, we will all meet at the Upper Kananaskis Lake Day Use Area parking at 9:15am. I will be camping in Kananaskis\, so you will have to arrange your own carpooling from Calgary. I do not have cell service and limited wifi\, so please\, no messages or cancellations after noon on Saturday\, unless it’s an emergency. Please don’t be late. Then\, we will pack into a few cars\, and drive over to the North Interlakes Day Use Area parking. We will start our hike from there\, as we hike through the trees to Point backcountry campground. We stop there for lunch\, and then continue around the lake to the falls\, Hidden Lake\, past the Rawson Lake turnoff\, and back\nto the Upper Kanananaskis Lake turnoff. We will require one or two drivers to take a few of us back to the other parking lot. Please\nbe patient and cooperative. \nI have done this many times\, so it all makes sense to me. If it is confusing to you\, please leave a question in the comments. \nDistance: Approximately 18km (shortened loop)\nElevation: Approximately 400m \nDue to bears\, a minimum of four participants is mandatory for the hike to go ahead. \nWe meet at the Upper Lakes Day Use Area at 9:15am. This will be a long day\, please don’t make evening plans. I cannot tell you what time the hike will end. Please plan your pickup times accordingly to arrive by 9:15am. \nBear spray\, good hiking boots\, backpack\, lunch\, and 3L of water are mandatory.

SUMMARY:Bike Ride : Varsity-Edgemont & Creek Ride
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nCalgary is home to more than 1\,000 kilometers of dedicated bike pathways. As cyclists\, we have set out countless times to discover new routes\, yet it always feels like there is another hidden trail waiting to be explored.\n**For this ride\, one of our members asked: *Why not start at Varsity and explore Edgemont\, Dalhousie\, and the north side of the city?***\nIt was an easy “yes.” We are incredibly fortunate to have Shroan with us\, whose excellent knowledge of this area makes her the perfect guide. While we have already ridden some of these individual sections\, the real fun this time will be discovering how they all connect.\nThink of this as completing another essential piece of the puzzle. This journey will carve out our northern loop\, traveling from west to east along the Mattamy Greenway to tie another beautiful section of our “Green Loop” together. \n🌲 Distance: The ride will be approximately **50–60 km round trip**\, depending on the group’s pace\, preferences\, and the weather. Please be prepared for the maximum distance of **up to 60 km** to ensure you’re ready for the full ride.\n🌲 Elevation gain: about 400-450 meters\n🌲 Time: 5 – 6 hours\, depending on group size and number of participants\n🌲 Group Size: 8-10 (No dogs\, children or guests)\n🌲 Required gear:\n– bike\n– helmet\n– water\n– lunch / snacks\n– hat / gloves\n– technical clothing (no cotton\, no jeans)\n– rain coat\n🌲 Suggested gear:\n– spare inner tube\, patch kit and pump\n– sunscreen\n– personal first aid kit\n🌲 Signup\nA waiting list has been created. SUMMARY:Rawson Lake with optional Sarrail Ridge - Relaxed Pace
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI (Andy B) love Sarrail Ridge and Gary G loves Rawson Lake. They’ve both been closed due to grizzlies\, but it appears that they are now open. Let’s go before they close them again! \nGary and I are going to try something different. We’re going to co-host two different hikes at the same time. \nGary is going to lead all of us on a relaxed\npace hike along Upper Kananaskis Lake and up through the trees to Rawson Lake. We will walk around the back of the lake to have lunch. For Rawson Lake only: \nDistance: 7.1 km (plus a little extra to the back of the lake)\nElevation: 521 m \nAfter lunch\, Gary will take half the group back down to the trailhead and end his hike. I will take the more adventurous\, experienced\, hikers up the dusty\, more challenging hike up to Sarrail Ridge and then back down to the trailhead. Sarrail Ridge is absolutely beautiful\, but is a hard\, slippery\, slow\, climb up to the ridge. There is a lot of elevation gain and the trail is dusty and eroded. You will need to use your hands\, making this similar to a scramble. You will need good boots with traction\, microspikes for grip\, hiking experience\, a positive attitude and teamwork. We will go slow up to the ridge and work together. The total up to Sarrail is: \nDistance: 12.2 km\nElevation: 1045m \nI (Andy B) usually only take hikers I know on challenging mountain hikes. Since this event is a little different\, I will take some experienced\, new to me\, hikers. When you sign up\, you will choose Rawson or Sarrail. At lunch\, I will decide who I feel comfortable taking up the ridge. My decision is final. If I am not comfortable taking you up the ridge\, you will head down with Gary’s group. The rest of the group will head down with Gary. You can also change your mind at lunch after seeing the ridge. \nIt is very important to me that everyone hikes together as a group\, you can always see the leader\, and no one runs ahead\, even on the way down. \nWe meet at the Upper Lakes Day Use Area at 9:15am\, to be ready to hike at 9:30am sharp. This will be a long day\, please don’t make evening plans. I cannot tell you what time either hike will end. I can take 3 (max 4) passengers from Petro\, on the north end of the gravel road\, on the hwy 22 side. Please plan your pickup times accordingly to arrive by 9:15am. \nBear spray is mandatory for all. For Sarrail\, good hiking boots and microspikes are mandatory. Poles are optional\, but recommended. Lunch\, snacks\, 2-3 litres of water plus electrolytes\, poles\, changes of clothes\, medications\, waterproof hiking boots\, gaiters\, required. First aid kit\, tensor bandage\, and emergency silver blanket are recommended in case things don’t go to plan. Extra socks and plastic bags for your boots are also useful. A water bladder you can drink while you hike\, plus a backup water bottle is ideal. \nYou will sign in on paper at the hike showing you agree to the waiver. SUMMARY:Helen & Catherine Lake Moderate Pace( 14 km return)
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nHIKE is currently open; but there may be closures due to bear activities and fish restoration activities; plan B TBD\n**The Parking lot is quite small\,** 20 cars maximum\, hence the intent is to start earlier.\nCarpooling: At your discretion; I shall meet you at the trailhead.\nDESCRIPTION: At 1965 m elevation\, we start from the parking lot. Entering the forest\, we follow a well-marked trail for roughly 4.5km\, with lovely flowers accompanying us and a few apology of creeks. As we emerge from the trees\, we get some stupendous views\, Bow Lake\, Crowfoot Glacier\, meandering Bow River and Dolomite Peak. \nCrossing Helen Creek\, the route arrives at Helen Lake at 5.7 km\, at an elevation 2398 m. After a quick snack break\, we hike to the 6.8 km (at 2597m) mark\, the highest point of the day for a lovely view of the Catherine lake and then take the lunch break l shall not use words like ethereal\, verdant\, & pristine\, to describe the milieu\, but leave you to be the judge. \n**The geology** of the Helen Lake area\, is a classic showcase of Cambrian-era marine sedimentation and mountain building. It features 500-million-year-old fossilized reefs\, steep mountain folds(evident at the Cirque Peak) \, and more recent glacial landforms. The rocks are carbonate rocks (limestone and dolostone) that were laid down in shallow Cambrian seas. Continental “redbeds” (red-colored siltstones and sandstones) are present. The red color is due to a coat of iron ore. Stromatolite means “layered rock”. They are not formed by a single plant or animal. Instead\, they are created by colonies of blue-green algae.\nINFO\nhttp://www.hikingwalking.com/destinations/ab/ab_rockies/banff/helen_dolomite/helen_dolomite_detail \nhttps://www.myhikingjournal.com/single-post/2016/07/20/day-hike-helen-lakedolomite-pass \nParticipation is not first come first served and is at the discretion of the organizer. SUMMARY:Lillian Lake with optional Galatea Lakes - Relaxed Pace
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI (Andy B) love Galatea Lakes\, but my friend Gary G\, prefers the shorter day of ending at Lillian Lake. So\, Gary and I are going to try something different. We’re going to co-host two different hikes at the same time. \nGary is going to lead all of us on a relaxed\npace hike along the beautiful bridges and up to Lillian Lake. We will go slow on the steep hill at the end. We will all have lunch at the Lillian Lake backcountry campground. For Lillian Lake only: \nDistance: 13km\nElevation: 629m \nAfter lunch\, Gary will take half the group back down to the trailhead and end his hike. I will take the more adventurous\, experienced\, hikers the rest of the way to the beautiful Galatea Lakes. You will need good boots\, hiking experience\, and a positive attitude. We will stick together as a group. We will have a snack break\, and if it is warm\, maybe swim at the second Galatea Lake. The total up to Galatea Lakes is: \nDistance: 17.2km\nElevation: 880m \nI (Andy B) usually only take hikers I know on challenging mountain hikes. Since this event is a little different\, I will take some experienced\, new to me\, hikers. When you sign up\, you will choose Lillian or Galatea. At lunch\, I will decide who I feel comfortable taking the to the Galatea Lakes. My decision is final. If I am not comfortable taking you up the rest of the way\, you will head down with Gary’s group. The rest of the group will head down with Gary. You can also change your mind at lunch. Both options are challenging mountain hikes with significant elevation gain. Please research the hikes and make sure you are fit enough to do the hikes before signing up. Due to the steep hill\, these hikes are not recommended for people with knee issues. \nIt is very important to me that everyone hikes together as a group\, you can always see the leader\, and no one runs ahead\, even on the way down. \nWe meet at the Galatea Parking Lot at 9:15am\, to be ready to hike at 9:30am sharp. This will be a long day\, please don’t make evening plans. I cannot tell you what time either hike will end. Please plan your pickup times accordingly to arrive by 9:15am. \nBear spray and good hiking boots are mandatory. SUMMARY:Bike Ride : Botrell General Store\, Cochrane
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n***Please read the trip description carefully\, as all the information you need is already provided there. I’d appreciate it if you could review the details before asking questions\, especially when the information has already been clearly stated. Thank you for your understanding.***\nSome of our cycling members signed up for Paul YYC’s ride\, a week ago but unfortunately\, the weather was too smoky to make it happen. and my co-host\, Cat also mentioned the Store how beautiful it is. So we decided to give this ride another go! Hopefully\, the weather stays as forecasted this time.\n**”ROUTE DESCRIPTION:** This is the northward run of a great *ROAD RIDE* along Horse Creek Road\, a loop on the roads northwest of Cochrane. Grades are gentle\, revealing a terrain of soft\, rolling hills\, sweeping ranchlands and deeply incised creek valleys that drop down to the Bow River. Lush native grasses blanket this gently undulating landscape\, a defined upland escarpment lead the eye toward the majestic Foothills/Rockies. It is pretty much all up on the way to the Stores\, rather till 26th Kilometric point beyond which\, the road slopes down to Bottrell. All down home is lovely ride\, with some gentle swooshes (S turns) to add some fun in our humdrum existence. A couple of abandoned oil pumps are mute witness the to area’s once wealthy past. \n**Interesting tidbits:** The oldest general stores in Canada was Épicerie J.A. Moisan in Quebec City\, closed down in 2026\, after 150 years in business.” **Route description and interesting tidbits credited to Paul YYC.** \n***After our ride\, we’ll gather for a tailgate picnic at the Cat’s home. Please bring something to share with the group.
