It turns into Highway 546 : follow the signs to Sandy McNabb Campground. It’s about 35 kilometers to Sheep River Falls.\nFrom the Sheep River Falls turnoff\, it’s a 250 meters walk to the falls where there are some benches to relax at.\nPlease consider whether you’re comfortable sharing the road with vehicles. **Wind** will also be a key factor\, and I’ll be monitoring the forecast closely.\nIf conditions are too windy\, the ride will be cancelled — so please **check for updates before heading out.**\n– Distance: about 70 km round trip\n– Elevation gain: about 600 -700meters (there are a few steep hills !)\n– Time on your tail: about 6-7hours but no promises.\n– Group size: 6-8\n🌲**Post-Ride Hangout!** 🚴‍♂️☕\n***After we wrap up our ride\, we’re going to tailgate and hang out! SUMMARY:Ribbon Falls - (T3) - Strong beginners **Exploratory**
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nWith the rain that we’ve been having\, this is the perfect time to see a waterfall. Rain is in the forecast\, but it’s a very low possibility. \nRibbon Falls is one of the best waterfall hikes in Kananaskis and in fact one of the prettiest waterfalls in Alberta\, especially in spring when many alpine trails are still snowbound. Even though it’s a long hike\, the elevation gain is modest\, so it’s doable for the majority of regular hikers. \nPlease read the following trip posting very carefully to ensure this hike is right for you. Please answer any RSVP questions\, and if the organizer deems it necessary to obtain additional information from you\, please provide it or you will remain on the waitlist. \nThis trip is weather dependent\, so please check the website the morning of the trip to make sure the trip has not been cancelled. \n***All participants are expected to act as a responsible member of the group. SUMMARY:Sawback trail 55 Km -updated Jun 27
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**Sawback trail 56 Km** Moose Meadows/Luellen Lake/Wildflower Creek/ Hidden Lake/Lake Louise\nThe **Pulsatilla Pass** is the defining peak of the trek\, views of Sawback and Slate Ranges. The **Baker Lake** is framed by Brachiopod Mountain and Heather Ridge. The bedrock along the Sawback Trail system is composed of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks\, spanning the Cambrian to Permian periods (~540 to 250 million years ago). These limestones\, shales\, and dolomites were originally deposited in an ancient shallow sea and were later thrust and faulted into vertical ridges (roughly 80-70 million years ago). The name SAWBACK originates from tooth like appearances of the peaks.\n**Sunrise & sunset:** 655am -705 am/827 pm -8 am\n**To keep in mind**: The bridge over the Johnston Creek at Inkpots is damaged; hence Banff visitor Center says the trail to Luellen Lake closed; Per Lake Louise Backcountry this trail will be open before our start date of Sep 3rd.\n**Departure point**: We shall park at Moose Meadows\, because Johnston Canyon lot is busy and a paid parking.\n**Backcountry Reservation**: done for three pads; one tent per pad; maximum number of persons allowed is 4 per pad per tent.\n**Day 1: 2nd Sep Wed: Moose Meadows Parking Lot to Luellen Lake Campground: Distance: 16.2 km**\, estimated time 5-6 hours\, Elevation gain/loss: +708m/-149m Jo18 (Johnston Creek camp) **3 pads booked.** Luellen Lake is about a Km away.\nThe hike from Moose Meadows to the Ink Pots is a simple 5.3 km trail where it meets up with the trail coming up from Johnston Canyon. From the Ink Pots we head across the meadows cross the bridge over Johnston Creek\, continue on the Johnston Creek Trail to reach Larry’s Camp (Jo9) at 7.6 km. We shall stop for a short break\, cross the creek and go left to continue towards Luellen Lake\, right takes us to the Mystic Pass. We continue for another 8.5 km through a mix of meadow and forest\, climbing gradually to reach a wide-open area and a sign pointing left or west towards Luellen Lake. We pitch our tents at Jo18 (Johnston Creek camp) and then climb gently for about 15-20 minutes to reach peaceful Luellen Lake . An outlet stream from the lake\, is the source of water and passes Jo18\n**Day 2: 3rd Sep Thu: Luellen Lake to Wildflower Creek Campground (Ba 15) via Pulsatilla Pass:16.6 Km / estimated time 6-7 hrs Elevation gain 430m and loss 300 m** 3 pads booked\nWe continue on the Sawback Trail as it heads northwest up the valley. The 6.3 km hike on the Sawback Trail to the Badger Pass Junction Campground is an easy one\, a gentle elevation gain of 100-120 m; It gets prettier along the way with the Sawback Range coming into view. We may have to fjord a stream\, and continue walking northwest\, through the willows till Pulsatilla Lake (300 m climb in 3.9 km) where we shall drop our packs and relax. We descend steeply down into the trees for to reach Ba 15 Wildflower Creek Campground (junction point of Baker Creek Trail). Anticipated soggy ground\, avalanche debris\, flash flood rubble in this section. We need to look for flagging tapes and hikers’ signs\, to identify the trail. Once we reach the subalpine meadow\, the hiking will provide sweeping views up the valley.\n**Day 3: 4th Sep Fri:** **Wildflower Creek to Baker Lake (SK 11) 5.3 km; then thru Deception Pass to Hidden Lake campground (Sk 5) 6.8 km; and continue 7.1 km to Fish Creek trail head: Distance: 19 km
Elevation gain:**\nThe terrain profile is rolling with the route navigating through subalpine meadows and rugged\, rocky passes. The trail climbs steeply through a rocky\, alpine landscape\, cresting Deception Pass\, which offers dramatic\, sweeping views of Ptarmigan Lake and the surrounding peaks. We descend from the pass winding along the northern shore of the lake; possibility to encounter muddy trail sections before we further descend toward the Hidden Lake junction. We continue towards the historic Halfway Hut. Just down from the hut\, we will reach an intersection. If we want\, we turn off towards **Hidden Lake\,** approx. a 3.2 km return trip **(**we take the trail fork that branches toward Hidden Lake\, departing from the main Skoki Loop. The side trail descends through subalpine terrain for about 400 meters before reaching the Hidden Lake Campground). The last 6 Km from Baker Lake Camp ground to Hidden Lake junction (Sk 11) is very beautiful. The last 3.9 km is a dreary trudge on a fire road with nothing to write to home about.\nFrom Baker Lake Camp Ground to Lake Louise Trail head\, it is a paltry 140 m elevation gain\, with an overall loss of 700 m.

SUMMARY:Remote Wilderness Backpack - Vol. 15
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**Vladdy Says**: I’m doing my annual remote back packing trip the week of Aug 30 – Sep. 6\, 7-8 days total. I have a decent leeway with dates and am open to accommodate people’s schedules – I can schedule the trip anytime between Aug 22 and Sep 16th \nIt takes 1.5 days to drive to trailhead. The area is not catered to\, so don’t expect urban park backpacking as in Banff or Jasper. This is for the love true wilderness\, and the place is of unusual beauty! \nThe trip itself will be 4 days plus I tend to tag on a day hike afterwards if people are interested. \nTotal distance ~55-65 km. \nOnly committed reliable backpackers please. \nBe comfortable and knowledgeable in wilderness self reliance in grizzly habitat\, they frequent the area\, however in late August they go down in the valleys to fish for salmon\, so encounters should be less likely. \nSome light scrambling may be involved depending on which ridges we chose to pick\, but overall terrain is not the harshest for this trip. Sections of bushwhacking and soggy ground are possible. \nIt is desirable you know how to use a compass and read a map\, although I can take care of these aspects. \nExpenses will include sharing gas money\, and the odd campsite along the way. I do recommend taking a hotel room for a shower and a good sleep after the trip and before heading back though. \n**Vladdy guarantees:** The place is of rare beauty\, and I hold it in mythical regards! \n**Vladdy requires**: No photos be posted on social media\, this is for the love of wilderness\, not for self promotion!

SUMMARY:Relaxed Tombstone Backpacking - 4 nights
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nThis is an expression of interest for a four night backpacking trip. \nMinimum 2; maximum 8 participants. \nPLEASE NOTE; YOU MUST HAVE HIKED WITH ME MULTIPLE TIMES\, AT LEAST ONE HIKE OVER 15KM\, AT A SIMILAR PACE\, HAVE BACKPACKING EXPERIENCE AND GEAR\, GET ALONG WELL WITH OTHERS\, AND WANT TO HIKE AT A RELAXED\, HAVE FUN IN THE MOUNTAINS\, GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER BETTER PACE. THERE WILL BE ONE WELL TRAINED DOG ON LEASH. \nThis is a four night backpacking trip leaving from Little Elbow out near Forget Me Not Pond on Sunday\, August 30th. On day one\, we will start at 10am and hike at a relaxed pace to Romulus backcountry where we will spend the night. On Monday\, August 31st\, we will get up at 8am\, have a relaxed breakfast\, pack up at 9am\, and be ready to hike at 10am to Tombstone backcountry campground. We will spend two nights (Monday\, August 31st\, and Tuesday\, September 1st) at Tombstone\, with a relaxed pace day hike to Tombstone Lakes on Tuesday. On Wednesday\, September 2nd\, we will pack up and head to Big Elbow backcountry campground for the night. On Thursday\, September 3rd\, we will hike out to the Little Elbow and return to our cars. \nIMPORTANT: PACE\, PERSONALITY\, AND SCHEDULE: \nI have lead and taught backpacking trips for kids and adults for many decades and I have learned a few things. The best way to have a fun\, relaxed\, and successful trip is to bring like minded people who hike at a similar pace and to set out the expectations ahead\, so here they are; \n– We hike as a group\, all together for safety and fun\, we don’t leave anyone behind or push them to go faster. That’s selfish and unsafe.\n– We hike at a relaxed pace\, not slow\, not fast\, not to get to the destination as fast as possible\, but to enjoy the trip\, nature\, and friends.\n– I am not a morning person. I have Autism\, Anxiety\, and ADHD. Asking me to change the schedule mid-trip causes me tremendous stress. I have put a lot of time into planning all aspects of the trip. It is firm. If this is not for you\, that is fine. Please do not come on this trip.\n– Our schedule is a little flexible\, but generally\, we wake up slowly at 8am\, have coffee and a real breakfast\, laugh\, chat. At 9am\, we take down tents\, packup\, leave the site spotless. At 10am\, we leave site and hike to the next site at a relaxed pace\, even on the hot days. We will stop for water breaks in the shade. You can choose to relax first or set up your tent first when we arrive\, but you must put ALL scented/food products in the bear locker ASAP\, for safety. We tend to eat supper around 6pm and go to bed around 10-11pm.\n– On day hike days\, a similar schedule\, wake up 8-9am\, start day hike at 10-11am. Please do not wake me up at 6-7am and ask me to move the schedule earlier or change the location of the day hike. If you want to request minor changes\, please do so politely\, after supper\, when I am at my most relaxed. Changes are not guaranteed and will consider the well-being of the entire group.\n– I am a firm believer in leave no trace. We follow Slow and Steady\, Alberta Parks\, and commonly accepted backpacking rules. \nDistance and Elevation Gain: \nDay 1: Little Elbow to Romulus 11.9km 175m\nDay 2: Romulus to Tombstone 10km 442m\nDay 3: Tombstone Lakes day hike 5km 250m Day 4: Tombstone to Big Elbow 12.7km 334m\nDay 5: Big Elbow to Little Elbow 8.3km 170m \nOnce you are accepted on the trip\, you will have to book your own campsite and send me a screenshot of your permit. \nMy well behaved\, experienced\, German Shepherd will be on this trip (on a leash\, in my tent). \nPlease no side or partial trips or shadow bookings (not getting accepted on the trip\, but booking the same nights at the campground). \nEveryone must have their own gear\, have backpacking experience\, and agree to follow all Alberta Parks and Slow and Steady regulations\, including leave no trace. \nTHANK YOU FOR READING THIS FAR!! PLEASE WRITE “RAVEN” IN THE QUESTIONS\nTO BE MOVED TO THE TOP OF THE WAITLIST! 😀 \nThere is a waitlist for this event. To be accepted you must agree to follow the rules and have hiked with me at least twice before (so I know if you are a good fit with the group). Once you are accepted on the trip\, you will need to book your own campsite and send me a screenshot of your permit. \nMust have positive attitude and answer the questions. Passive Aggressive behaviour not tolerated. I know I am being strict on the rules\, but unfortunately this is based on negative past experiences organizing these trips. The point is for everyone to have fun and enjoy nature\, we don’t need any unnecessary drama or stress. I hope you understand. \nPLEASE DON’T BOOK YOUR SITE UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED OFF THE WAITLIST.\n——————————————————————————————————————- \nWAIVER:\nAs per the new policy for waivers\, the waiver form will be signed atc the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this event. You will also be asked for the name and phone number of an emergency contact. Please come prepared with this information.\n[http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/](http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/)\nc\nIf you have not already done so\, please read the Slow and Steady Code of Conduct here: [http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/CODE_OF_CONDUCT/](http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/CODE_OF_CONDUCT/) \nDisclaimer: You are fully aware that your hosts are volunteers and not trained guides and you assume all responsibility hike with the group.

SUMMARY:Ptarmigan Cirque - Relaxed Pace - Beginners welcome
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI’ve posted some challenging hikes this summer\, but I think it’s time for an easier\none! In the mountains\, I usually only take hikers I know\, but I will make an exception for this one. If you are a new hiker or new to me\, please read the description carefully and come prepared with good hiking boots\, a backpack\, lots of water\, a lunch\, first aid kit\, and a positive attitude. \nWe will do a fun\, relaxed hike around Ptarmigan Cirque. Have lunch at the waterfall. We will not climb up on the loose rocks behind the waterfall (this time). We will all hike together\, in sight of each other\, no running ahead. We will stop for delayering and photo breaks\, but we will not stop every five minutes. \nDistance: 4.5km return\nElevation: 215m \nDue to the short length of this hike\, you are welcome to join me by the campfire at my campground (assuming no fire ban) for a get together and marshmallow roasting\, after the hike. There is one\, shared\, large fire pit for all guests. Details provided at the hike\, bring your own roasting sticks. \nWe will meet at the Highwood Meadows Parking Area at 9:45am. Look for the olive green Jeep. I will be camping in Kananaskis\, so you will have to arrange your own carpooling from Calgary. I do not have cell service and limited wifi\, so please\, no messages or cancellations after noon on Thursday\, unless it’s an emergency. Please don’t be late\, without cell service\, it is frustrating for everyone to be waiting at the trailhead. \nDue to bears\, a minimum of four participants is mandatory for the hike to go ahead. We will hike with light occassional rain and light smoke. Hike will be cancelled by 6pm the evening before if it will rain all day\, severe thunderstorms with lightning\, heavy smoke (over 9)\, there is a new bear closure\, or in event of the organizer illness or family emergency. I will have my friendly\, well trained\, German Shepherd on a leash at all times. No other dogs\, guests\, or children please. \nIt is very important to me that everyone hikes together as a group\, you can always see the leader\, and no one runs ahead\, even for the last few km’s. No exceptions. If you run ahead\, you will not hike with me again. We are out for a group hike. This gives us safety in numbers and a chance to hike with other likeminded individuals. If you like to hike solo\, or run far ahead\, please don’t join a group hike. Strong hikers\, do not pressure the slower hikers to go faster than they are comfortable. \nOn my hikes\, we take 4-12 experienced hikers. We do not run ahead or leave people behind. We are out to enjoy nature together\, get to know each other better\, and keep each other safe. If you run ahead of the group\, we will feed you to the bears. \nYou choose to make your own carpooling plans once you are accepted on the hike. Recommended $25 gas fee. I recommend meeting at Shouldice Park and Ride or Petro Canada at hwy 22 and 1. Please plan your pickup times accordingly to arrive by 9:45am. \nBear spray\, good hiking boots\, backpack\, lunch\, and 2L of water are mandatory. Poles are optional\, but recommended. Lunch\, snacks\, poles\, changes of clothes\, medications\, strongly recommended.
