All abilities and newcomers are welcome. Please be of weather conditions and prepare accordingly. We shall walk together as a group waiting at path intersections. The more we walk the stronger hikers we become. \nWAIVER:\nI have read and agree to Slow & Steady full Waiver & Code of Conduct located at: http://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/ DISCLAMIER\nand\nCODE OF CONDUCT: http://bit.ly/SnS_Conduct \nYou will be asked to sign the waiver along with an emergency contact and phone number. \nAttendance is at the organizer’s discretion\, subject to weather cancellations and is based on attendance history. ‘No Shows’ will be given unless you notify me by text at 587 998 9465. SUMMARY:Arethusa Cirque & Beyond T3/4
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nGary and I (Andy) both love hiking Arethusa Cirque. It’s a beautiful trail with nice Alpine views\, and usually Pika and Marmots. We are out for the day to enjoy the beauty of nature\, not to race back to the city. We will hike at a relaxed pace. \nGary will primarily lead\, I will run the posting and assist him. \nThis is less common than Ptarmigan\, but very interesting with waterfalls\, large boulders with pikas\, and a hidden trail to the top. \nT2- T3 Arethusa Cirque – The hike into the Little Cirque has an elevation gain of 170 metres into the first meadows and than another 250meters to the start of the the Bigger Cirque. \nThe first part of the hike is relatively easy as you gradually hike uphill through the forest. When you reach a large creek you continue left for more spectacular views or cross the stream for higher elevation gain (steeper climb). We may go off the main trails (OT3/4 bushwacking). \nYou must be a strong beginner or an intermediate willing to hike at a steady\, relaxed pace. We will be going at a reasonable rate with a few breaks when we are doing elevation in the mountains. We will not break into groups\, so everyone must hike at a similar pace. No running ahead. Please do not sign up if you are not willing to wait for the slowest hiker. If you run ahead of the group\, you will be fed to the bears. \nPlease bring waterproof boots and gaiters. There is a lot is water and mud and we’ll need to cross some small streams. \nGo directly to Highwood Pass Parking lot opposite of Ptarmigan Cirque trail. Must be at Parking lot by 8:15am. From there we will drive another 7 minutes South to dirt parking lot on the east side of Kananaskis. The traffic is very busy\, so you must alllow youself 2 hours to get there from City of Calgary NW limits. We will start our hike at Arethusa at 8:30am\, to avoid the heat of the day. \nIf you would like to carpool\, please wait until you have been accepted on the hike and then make your own arrangements in the comments or group chat. I (Andy can take three people from Petro $25 gas fee). \nA waiting list has automatically been created to determine this trip’s suitability for you as a potential participant. The organizers will be checking your hike history to determine your ability to complete this trip. If the organizer deems it necessary to obtain additional information from you\, please provide it\, otherwise\, you will remain on the waiting list. \nAndy Bell’s German Shepherd\, Jasmine\, will likely be on this hike\, on a leash at all times. She is an experienced hiker and does not chase pikas\, marmots\, deer or bears. She is very friendly. Unfortunately\, no other dogs allowed on the hike. \nBackpack must include 2 liters of water\, extra socks\, plastic bags in case boots get wet\, first aid kit\, medications\, toilet kit\, lunch\, and layers for all weather conditions. Good hiking boots\, gaiters\, and microspikes required. A positive attitude\, love of nature\, and sense of humour are also recommended. 🙃 \nPoles are bearspray are recommended. \nWe should be back by early afternoon to avoid the hot sun. \nAll participants are expected to read the Slow and Steady Waiver and Code of Conduct. You must sign the waiver at the trailhead to participate.

SUMMARY:Glenbow Ranch evening beginner/experienced relaxed hike
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI have been posting more challenging hikes the past few weeks after many months off\, as I get stronger. I have started limiting my hikes to people I have hiked with before. This is due to super fast hikers signing up and running ahead of the group\, super slow hikers signing up and making the group wait for them and a few hikers who can’t seem to get along with anyone or follow the rules\, making it an uncomfortable hike for everyone. I am a volunteer. This is supposed to be fun and safe for everyone! \nSo! I’m posting a Thursday evening hike at Glenbow Ranch for everyone. Beginners\nand experienced hikers welcome. Regardless of your speed and experience\, I expect you to show up prepared\, get along with others\, and hike at the pace of the group. No running ahead or asking to change the route. \nThere will be a minimum of four and maximum of 12 hikers. \nThe route has not yet been decided\, but it may be on pavement\, dirt trails\, open\, and treed\, flat\, and with some hills. We will hike for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours (7-9:30 or 10pm). \nBetween 5 and 11km with some elevation gain\, especially near the end. \nParticipation in this hike might get you on some hikers that I have posted for those I have hiked with before\, but it is not a guarantee. \nBackpack must include 2 liters of water\, first aid kit\, medications\, toilet kit\, snacks\, and layers for all weather conditions. Good hiking books are required. Poles are optional. A positive attitude\, love of nature\, and sense of humour are also recommended. 🙃 \nBearspray is recommended. We will hike without headlamps\, but you may bring one in your backpack. Please bring a backpack. \nAll participants are expected to read the Slow and Steady Waiver and Code of Conduct. You must sign the waiver at the trailhead to participate. You will need the name and phone number of an emergency contact.

SUMMARY:Bourgeau Lake and Harvey Pass/moderate pace
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**Bourgeau Lake and Harvey Pass**. There is no closure per Parks Canada\, at the time of posting. Overnight camping is not allowed. The parking lot is pretty small with room for ~20 cars\, hence we should be at the lot by 715 am.\n**Maximum 10 hikers**\n**MEETING AT TRAIL HEAD 0715 am**\, Parks Pass not required in summer.\n**Description from public domain\, Gaiagps/GEM Trek/hikebiketravel.com**\nThe Bourgeau Lake hike in Banff National Park is a hiker’s dream; starting with a steady forest climb along Wolverine Creek\, this trail rewards hikers with views of Bourgeau Lake’s peaceful waters\, spectacular alpine scenery\, and wildflowers\, followed by eye soothing views of the alpine lakelets of Harvey Pass. The distance return trip is 19.2 km to Harvey Pass\, with 1042 m elevation gain\, a gradient of about 10% per Gaiagps.\nMt. Bourgeau and Bourgeau Lake were named by James Hector for Eugene Bourgeau\, botanist with the Palliser Expedition (1857 – 1860)\nThis area sits within the **Bourgeau Thrust Sheet** ( complex folds and faults )of the Canadian Rockies. The local geology is characterized by **Paleozoic sedimentary rocks** (limestones and shales) that were thrust eastward over younger strata\, sculpted into a classic **glacial cirque** during the Pleistocene epoch (approx. 2.6 million to 11\,700 years ago).\n**Trailhead to Bourgeau Lake**: At the 5.5 km mark\, we are greeted by a beautiful view of the many cascades on Wolverine Creek Rock\, we de-layer and begin the climb. We reach the Lake shore at 7.4 Km mark. This would be a relaxing point for a bite\, to replenish our sagging energy.\n**Bourgeau Lake to Harvey Pass:** An easy-to-spot sign near Bourgeau Lake points us in the direction of Harvey Pass. We climb a further 297 metres over 2.2 km to reach Harvey Pass.\nWe climb on the right side of the cascading inlet to arrive at the first lakelet. We continue around the north shore to reach the second lakelet. Expect to be greeted by hoary marmots\nWe stop to look back at the stunning views of the Bourgeau Lake hike with alpine flowers\, may be some snow\, along with the pretty lakelets and mountains.\nWe climb a steep scree slope to reach Harvey Lake\, the third lakelet and Harvey Pass.\nIf we are lucky and the weather is clear\, Mt. Assiniboine\, ‘*Matterhorn of the Rockies*\,’ the highest peak in Banff National Park at 3\,618 m will greet us.\nWe can continue\, depending upon the group dynamics\, another 15-20 mins for more spectacular views\, or have our lunch and drag ourselves to the car parking lot\nTrail rating: T3 [http://bit.ly/SnS_TrailRating](http://bit.ly/SnS_TrailRating)\nEvent: Whole day\nPace: SLOW\, MUST REMAIN IN VIEW OF THE ENTIRE GROUP. Once we reach the top\, we shall have plenty of astounding photo opportunities! If the participants so desire\, we can have a meal n drink at the end of the hike either in Banff or in Canmore.\nThis hike is subject to trail remaining OPEN.\nA waiting list has automatically been created to determine this trip’s suitability for you as a potential participant. **Waiting list is not first come\, first serve\, but it’s based on the ability to fit into group dynamics and organizer’s discretion and past participation in SnS Hikers group events.** If the organizer requires additional information from you\, please provide it\, otherwise\, you will remain on the waiting list. I am not a licensed guide\, hence completely dependent on group members for safety support.\nYou must adhere to the Slow and Steady Code of Conduct: [http://bit.ly/SnS_Conduct](http://bit.ly/SnS_Conduct)\nMandatory Gear: bear spray\, hiking boots\, appropriate layers for the temperature\, rain jacket & pants\, hiking day/backpack\, lunch/snacks\, water (2 liters or more)\, hiking poles\, bug spray\, sunscreen\, personal-sized first aid kit\, personal medications as needed\, hand sanitizer/wipes. ABSOLUTELY NO BEAR BELLS or COTTON CLOTHING.\nPlease don’t put me in position to turn you away from the trailhead if you don’t have above listed required gear.\nWaiver: [https://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/](https://www.meetup.com/Slow-and-Steady-Hikers/pages/OUR_NEW_WAIVER/)\nYou must provide phone number of an emergency contact. DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**NOTE:**\n**Departure Time From Petrocan: 06:36 am**\n**Arrival Time @ Trailhead**: **~08:15 am**\n**GROUP SIZE:** max 10\n**TRIP DESCRIPTION:**\n**Rating:** OT5 (similar to Memorial Lakes)\n**Stats to Lake:**\nElevation Gain: ~1120m (Parks Canada)\nElevation Loss: ~295m (Parks Canada)\nDistance: <21 km return \nThis trip will provide great views\, weather permitting\, and a good gauge of your fitness for longer and higher trips. \nThe trail through the main valley offers no shade and is exposed with overgrowth being the theme until we hit the switchbacks to the lake. In addition the valley trail has undulations which will add to the total elevation. The switchbacks are steep and present the most arduous section of the trip. In other words\, **this is not for beginners or intermediate hikers**. The intent is maintain a steady pace to reach the lake and take advantage of the sunlight for pics prior to the typical afternoon cloud as there is an outside chance of rain. At the lake those who are Wim Hof practitioners can indulge. Depending on the group there will be an option to going up to Numa Pass which adds ~6.4km and 300m elevation gain. While the trip to the lake is worthwhile in itself adding this option will achieve spectacular views and more endurance for upcoming longer and higher trips. The intital hope was to do a loop via the Numa Cr route; however\, the rain washout of the bridge resulted in this out and back trip. \nDo not sign up if you have to be back by a specific time since we probably stop for a post trip recovery/refreshments/refuel afterwards.\nNote that this is bear country so we will stay fairly close together. \n**REFERENCE:**\n[The Floe Lake Trail: Complete 2026 Hiking Guide | Off Track Travel](https://offtracktravel.ca/floe-lake-trail-kootenay-national-park/) \n**WEATHER:** [Yr – Foster Peak – Long term forecast](https://www.yr.no/en/forecast/daily-table/2-5956441/Canada/British%20Columbia/Regional%20District%20of%20East%20Kootenay/Foster%20Peak) \n**Mandatory Requirements/Gear:** \n🏔️ personal first aid kit & toiletry kit\,\n🏔️ 2-3L H2O \, nourishment & energy refuel\,\n🏔️ layered weather appropriate clothing (no cotton clothing)\,\n🏔️ backpack\,\n🏔️ sturdy hiking boots\, approach/trail shoes\, 🏔️ Note that **if you have bear spray bring it\,**\n🏔️ Hike as a group within sight of each other\,\n🏔️ Positive attitude \n**Optional :**\n🏔️Sun protection/sun block\, sunglasses\, bug spray\n🏔️ trekking poles\, gaiters\n🏔️ camera\n🏔️ warm me up for post swim \nSuggested Gas Fee Contribution: $25 per person \n**NOTES:**\n🌲 RSVP to join the wait list. SUMMARY:Healy Pass T3 - Relaxed pace
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**Healy Pass T3 – Relaxed pace**\nHealy Pass is a classic\, 19.5 km out-and-back hike. The first 6 to 7.5 km are a steady\, somewhat uneventful walk through dense pine forest alongside Healy Creek\, passing the Healy Creek Campground. The trail then breaks free into vibrant\, sprawling alpine meadows. The final stretch to the pass opens up completely\,. The elevation rise is gradual\, it climbs 700 m past dense forest to expansive alpine meadows\, culminating in stunning and dramatic views of Monarch Ramparts\, Mount Assiniboine\, and Egypt Lake\nPace: Moderate/Relaxed\, Distance: ~19km; Elevation Gain: ~800m Time: This is all day event\nDifficulty: T3 strenuous\nMandatory Gear:\nHiking boots\, Wind/water resistant jacket\, Hiking poles \, Gaiters\, Water/lunch/snacks\, BEAR spray (Mandatory) and Smiles!!!!!\n**Geology:** The mountains flanking Healy Pass are primarily composed of limestone and dolomite which were deposited in shallow ancient seas roughly 500 million to 250 million years ago.\nThe landscape was created roughly 80 to 55 million years ago during the Laramide Orogeny\, when massive tectonic plates shoved these ancient sedimentary rock layers eastward and upward over younger rock\nThe abrupt\, steep-walled valleys and sharp peaks are the result of intense Pleistocene glaciation. Glaciers carved wide U-shaped valleys out of the older bedrock\nThe lush\, wildflower-filled meadows of Healy Meadows are perched in a “hanging valley” formed by retreating glaciers. The exposed rock bands\, such as hard dolomite ledges along the Healy Creek\, form small\, picturesque waterfalls and river drops.\nA waiting list has automatically been created to determine this trip’s suitability for you as a potential participant. **Waiting list is not first come\, first serve\, but it’s based on the ability to fit into group dynamics and organizer’s discretion and also on past participation in SnS Hikers group events. SUMMARY:Picklejar Lakes - Relaxed Pace - Experienced Hikers
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nPicklejar is one of my favourite\, longer hikes. After a beautiful drive down hwy 40 watching the scenery and sometimes bears\, coyotes\, always big horn sheep\, we arrive at the trailhead. Then we hike 5km to the first lake\, and continue along\, higher into the alpine\, with different flowers\, plants\, and often pikas and marmots. There is a possibility of bears. After the first lake\, we quickly reach the second\, third\, and fourth beautiful lakes. We will stop for a leisurely lunch between the 3rd and 4th lakes. Then\, we will return the same way for a total of: \n10.9km and 682m elevation gain \nIf it is hot out\, the brave souls have a tradition of bringing a swim suit\, towel\, hand warmers\, and water shoes\, and we take a quick swim in the third lake! \nWe meet at the Lantern Day Use trailhead\, see map\, at 9:45am\, to be ready to hike at 10am sharp. This will be a long day\, please don’t make evening plans. \nOn my hikes\, we take 8-12 experienced hikers. We do not run ahead or leave people behind. We are out to enjoy nature together\, get to know each other better\, and keep each other safe. If you run ahead of the group\, we will feed you to the bears. \nThat being said\, this hike is for experienced hikers who want to hike at a relaxed pace. To be accepted on this hike\, YOU MUST HAVE HIKED WITH ME BEFORE. No beginners\, no guests\, no children. I may bring my friendly\, experienced hiking dog\, on a leash\, if there\nis room in my Jeep. Her name is Jasmine. \nYou choose to make your own carpooling plans once you are accepted on the hike. Recommended $25 gas fee. I recommend meeting at Shouldice Park and Ride or Petro Canada at hwy 22 and 1. I can take 3 (max 4) passengers from Petro\, on the north end of the gravel road\, on the hwy 22 side. The time to get there will depend on whether you take the south route through Longview or north through Kananaskis. Please plan your pickup times accordingly to arrive by 9:45am. \nFor those interested\, we will stop for supper at the Black Diamond Hotel on our way home. You need to take the Longview route to get there. Please coordinate with your drivers/passengers to decide if your car will stop for supper. My Jeep\, leaving from Petro (or Bragg Creek if there is more interest)\, will stop for supper. Drivers must have a Kananaskis Park Pass. \nBear spray and cameras recommended. Lunch\, snacks\, 2-3 litres of water plus electrolytes\, poles\, changes of clothes\, medications\, waterproof hiking boots\, gaiters\, required. Water purification tablets\, a headlamp with new batteries\, first aid kit\, tensor bandage\, and emergency silver blanket are recommended in case things don’t go to plan. Extra socks and plastic bags for your boots are also useful. A water bladder you can drink while you hike\, plus a backup water bottle is ideal. \nPlease read the slow and steady waiver and code of conduct in advance. You will sign in agreeing to the conditions of the waiver at the trailhead and leave an emergency contact name and number. You agree to follow slow and steady policies\, listen to the organizer\, treat everyone with respect\, do your own research on the hikes\, come prepared\, and recognize that your organizers are volunteers who put in a lot of their own time to plan and lead these hikes for you.
