SUMMARY:HUMMINGBIRD PLUME LOOKOUT (hike\, relaxed pace)
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nThis pleasant hike is mainly on forested trails\, which are cross-country ski trails in the winter. Because the trails are wide and forested\, it makes for easy\, relaxed hiking. The trip starts at the Troll Falls trailhead and follows various loops up to Hummingbird Plume Hill. The fire lookout is no longer in use\, and the forest has grown up around it\, so there are no views from the lookout. However\, if you follow a short trail east of the lookout\, it opens up to a beautiful view of the Kananaskis Valley.\n**Distance**: 10.5 return\n**Elevation gain**: 395 m\n**Trail:** mainly through forest; out and back\n**Difficulty:** Trail 2; Intermediate hikers\n**Pace**: **Slow to moderate; not fast**. *Please don’t sign up if you are a speedy hiker\, or if you don’t want to stay with the group.*\n**Time**: About five hours on the trail. (This doesn’t include driving time to the event and back).\n**Trailhead:** TROLL FALLS PARKING LOT. From Calgary\, drive on the TransCanada to the Highway 40 turn-off (Kananaskis). Drive on highway 40 to the Nakiska/Kananaskis Village turn-off. Turn right and drive over the bridge. On the right side of the road (before Nakiska)\, there is a road going down to the Troll Falls parking lot. I’ll meet you at the trailhead\, which is beside the washroom.\n**Meeting time**: 10:00 am at Troll Falls parking lot. Look for a Black Dodge Grand Caravan; short older lady. I’m scheduling this so the hike will end around 4 pm\, which will give you time to attend the Slow and Steady anniversary event at Opal picnic area.\n**Passes:** You will need a Kananaskis pass for this trip.\n**Number of hikers**: **Maximum of eight hikers**; It’s easier to keep track of eight people than a large group\, so the size is limited to eight. There is a waitlist created for this trip; please answer a few short questions if we haven’t hiked together before. We need at least four people on the hike because of bears. Please note; I’ll be bringing my dog along\, on a leash. If you don’t like dogs\, please choose another hike.\nWEATHER: THIS TRIP IS WEATHER-DEPENDENT. PLEASE CHECK THE WEBSITE THE NIGHT BEFORE TO MAKE SURE THE HIKE HASN’T BEEN CANCELLED.\n**References:**\n**[trailpeak.com/trails/hummingbird-plume-lookout-near-kananaskis-ab-3274](https://trailpeak.com/trails/hummingbird-plume-lookout-near-kananaskis-ab-3274)**\nor *Kananaskis Country Trail Guide\,* third edition\, page 112\nor *Kananaskis Country Trail Guide\,* fourth edition\, page 69\n**Carpooling:** You can use the comments section to arrange carpooling. As I live in Cochrane\, I won’t be arranging carpooling from Calgary.\n**Cost for carpooling:** Zone 2; $15 per passenger plus extra towards the conservation pass if you don’t have one.\n**Suggested gear**: hiking boots\, pack\, layers of clothing including wind and rain resistant layers; lunch\, water\, personal first aid kit; hiking poles if you use them; bear spray.\n**Mandatory gear: bear spray.** Make sure it hasn’t expired.\n**Waiver and Code of Conduct**\nI will bring a waiver to the trailhead which you must sign before going on the trip. Please provide the name and phone number of your emergency contact.\nYour participation in this event means you have read the waiver and by signing up for this event you have accepted the waiver. You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides\, and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear\, and you are physically fit to do this hike with the group. You are responsible for your own safety and well-being.\nAll participants are responsible for assessing current road\, weather\, trail and avalanche conditions for the trip.

DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n*****Group spread has become a big concern for me\, and in order to combat it\, my attendance limit going forward will be a max group of ten (or less)\, including me. I’m hopeful to reach people in recognizing how dangerous a practice this has become. If you have not been directly involved in an event where someone gets separated from the group\, causing a major delay\, you have definitely heard stories of it happening. Someone lost is the least of the concerns\, which still has the potential to tax our overloaded SAR guys. It’s just a matter of time before someone gets injured or\, worse\, loses their life\, which has already happened to our beloved friend\, Trina. If racing to the summit and back is the most important thing for you\, please find an appropriate group to do that with\, or organize trips yourself with capable\, like-minded people. And please stay together as one group when you do.***** \nIf being in our majestic mountains\, soaking up all the beauty nature has to offer us\, creating great memories with awesome\, like minded people sounds good to you\, please sign up and share your energy to getting the most out of our precious remaining life seconds!!! \n****It is a requirement to read the following trip posting very carefully and to make the proper and responsible preparations for it. Having been out of the hiking scene for most of 2026 this is the perfect place and time for some serious soul fertilizing that I am personally desperate for. I am not hiking fit and this will be a relaxed pace trip\, with the intent of spending a ‘considerable amount of time’ on the ridge soaking in the view once up there. It will be a long\, easy paced day\, but you have to suck up the early start time if you want to join. \nI can’t remember the stats… say something like 10k\, 1000m gain\, and plenty of sit around time on the ridge\, so… let’s say a 12 hour day. \nYou don’t have to do anything technical here (with some option for it)\, but the trial to the ridge is a very steep ascent/descent\, so you have to be comfortable with that as a minimum. There is potential for some scrambling so if you’re keen for that pack your helmet\, please. \nCheers\, \nMichael JC \nYeah\, I can hear your groans about the start time. Suck it up. We’re not going to work\, we are going to have a fun day in the mountains. We will be ahead of the crowds AND there is a 99.94% chance we will have a mirror flat Rawson Lake ;). \nTimes are approx… if you need to be back in the city at a specific time\, it’s best to sit this one out. \n*******Please be kind to your fellow hikers and only sign up if you are committed to the event so you don’t take away the opportunity for someone else who might really want to join****.*** \nRideshare fee $20.00. \nMust-Have Gear \n-Sunscreen\n-Sunglasses\n-Bear Spray (not a ‘must have’ but bring if you do have\, please)\n-Headlamp (With fresh batteries)\n-An appropriate backpack\n-Proper hiking clothes/boots (NO COTTON)\, 1.5 liters of water\, personal first aid kit\, emergency bivvy sack\, and fire starting materials. \n***Pack appropriately\, i.e.\, like you are spending the night out unexpectedly!!!*** \n**HEADLAMP**(<——-this is written twice\, did you notice?) and FRESH batteries\, spare socks\, 1.5 liters of water (<—– this is also written twice)\, a big lunch\, and high energy snack foods. \nOptional Gear \n-Rock Climbers Helmet (if you want to scramble)\n-Hiking poles\n-Ski Goggles \nYour participation in this event means you have read and accepted the waiver by signing up for it. If you have stated "no" in your profile\, you will not be accepted to participate. SUMMARY:Three Lakes Valley T3
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n[https://hikingwithpar.com/2017/07/11/chester-lake-three-lakes-valley/](https://hikingwithpar.com/2017/07/11/chester-lake-three-lakes-valley/) \nFossils\, Lakes\, and Larches\nDistance: 15.5 km\nElevation: 600 meters \nI don’t believe I’ve ever been up here during larch season. I plan to hike to at least the second tarn and maybe carry on into the cirque.\nThe hike isn’t hard but there are some steep parts. The views are spectacular from the meadows before Chester Lake and just keep getting better the higher we go.\nStrong beginners should be fine with this hike. The pace will be Slow and Steady. I don’t want any speed demons along. Also we hike as a group and stop at all junctions. \nThe Slow and Steady waiver ( which I will supply ) and Code of Conduct are in effect. \nThe suggested gas fee per passenger is $25.\nIncluding myself\, I’ll need at least 3 more drivers. \nBring enough to drink and eat and dress for the weather. Key word\, Layers.
