SUMMARY:Scenic Bike Ride to Botrell General Stores
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**DESTINATION**: Bottrel General Store & Campground is the oldest continually run general store in Alberta\, est. 1901\, on the Cowboy Trail \n**ROUTE DESCRIPTION:** This is the northward run of a great *ROAD RIDE* along Horse Creek Road\, a loop on the roads northwest of Cochrane. Grades are gentle\, revealing a terrain of soft\, rolling hills\, sweeping ranchlands and deeply incised creek valleys that drop down to the Bow River. Lush native grasses blanket this gently undulating landscape\, a defined upland escarpment lead the eye toward the majestic Foothills/Rockies. It is pretty much all up on the way to the Stores\, rather till 26th Kilometric point beyond which\, the road slopes down to Bottrell. All down home is lovely ride\, with some gentle swooshes (S turns) to add some fun in our humdrum existence. A couple of abandoned oil pumps are mute witness the to area’s once wealthy past.\n**Interesting tidbits:** The oldest general stores in Canada was Épicerie J.A. Moisan in Quebec City\, closed down in 2026\, after 150 years in business.\n**Geology:** The geology features shallow sedimentary bedrock covered by Pleistocene glacial deposits and exposed river-cut terraces. \nDistance: approx. 60 Km round trip.\nDuration: No rush to return to Cochrane\nElevation: Max 1338 m\, gain 300-350 m over 30 km\nPhysical Difficulty: Intermediate\nEvent Pace: Will stop to take breaks when needed.\nSuggested Gear: Camera\nPlease be at the designated by 0800 am to drive a bit further to park our cars in a residential area.\nMANDATORY ITEMS: \n1. Sun screen\n2. Water spiked with hydralite /eqv tablets\n3. WHISTLE\n4. Must remain in visual contact\n5. Bikes: road bike\, or hybrid\, MTB or electric bikes\n6. Appropriate layers for current season\n7. First aid kit\n8. Biking Kit (Tools\, extra tube\, pump ..)\n9. Helmets are mandatory\, no exceptions \n**Amenities:** There are no amenities along the route. Stop in Cochrane prior or after the ride if you require a pit stop.\n**Motor vehicle traffic**; locals/farm vehicle drivers are very polite\, I was on a weekday and was NOT uncomfortable at all.\n**OUTCOME:** Soothing your ocular nerves\, a great training & stamina building opportunity\, and wheeze past the rural homes painted in the sky. \nWe will ride in group\, in a file\, we will wait periodically for the slowest ones. We shall make best efforts to stay in visual/audio contact. We shall go along the Scenic Horse Creek Road ( **we are not biking on the Highway 1A** ) \n**HISTORY**: Along the foothills exists a narrow band of mixed forests and grasslands known for its moderate climate\, a wide variety of wildlife species and broad ecological diversity. This attracted the First Nations people to this paradise hundreds of years ago. Alberta ranching families first settled in this area in the 1880s and transformed the rolling grasslands into cattle country. \n**CAR POOLING**: please communicate directly or thru COMMENTS section\nThose who want to earn their calories back; they are free to visit the watering holes of Cochrane. Club is not responsible for consequences of visiting the watering holes. \n**WAITLIST:** A waiting list has automatically been created to determine this trip’s suitability for you as a potential participant. **Waiting list is not first come\, first serve\, but it’s based on the ability to fit into group dynamics and organizer’s discretion and also on past participation in SnS Hikers group events. SUMMARY:Mt Lipsett - Relaxed Pace - Experienced Hikers - LATE START!
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI have recently hiked Mount Lipsett for the first time and it was awesome! There are other organizers posting Lipsett\, but with a very early start time\, so it has been requested that I lead a “later version”. I am not a morning person\, and cannot physically do it. So\, this hike will be a little different. We will not have advantage of the cool morning and the hike may run late. Please be prepared for hot weather\, bring lightweight\, sun blocking clothes\, a hat\, and at least 3L of water\, electrolytes\, suncreen\, and a headlamp with fresh batteries\, just in case. You will need a good breakfast\, good lunch\, and lots of high energy\, quick snacks to eat along the way. A water bladder with a back up water bottle\, is recommended\, so you can drink water without stopping all the time. \nIf the sun is very hot\, we will take a relaxed break (siesta) in the shade during the hottest part of the day. Drinking water is essential. A wet bandana around your neck is also helpful. We will get back late. Do not make evening plans. We will stop for supper along the way back. If the weather is uncooperative\, we will reschedule. \nThe trail is 14.5km long and has 730m elevation gain. \nWe meet at the Mount Lipsett trailhead\, see map\, at 9:15am\, to be ready to hike at 9:30am sharp. This will be a long day\, please don’t make evening plans. \nOn my hikes\, we take 8-12 experienced hikers. We do not run ahead or leave people behind. We are out to enjoy nature together\, get to know each other better\, and keep each other safe. If you run ahead of the group\, we will feed you to the bears. \nThat being said\, this hike is for experienced hikers who want to hike at a relaxed pace. To be accepted on this hike\, YOU MUST HAVE HIKED WITH ME BEFORE. No beginners\, no guests\, no children. If you have not hiked with me before\, please join my monthly\, evening\, Glenbow Ranch hikes so we can get to know each other before going yo the mountains. The next two are posted for Thursday\, July 30th\, and Thursday\, August 27th. You choose to make your own carpooling plans once you are accepted on the hike. Recommended $25 gas fee. I recommend meeting at Shouldice Park and Ride at 7:00am or Petro Canada at hwy 22 and 1 at 7:15am. I can take 3 (max 4) passengers from Petro\, on the north end of the gravel road\, on the hwy 22 side. Drivers must have a Kananaskis Park Pass. \nBear spray and cameras recommended. Lunch\, snacks\, 2-3 litres of water plus electrolytes\, poles\, changes of clothes\, medications\, waterproof hiking boots\, gaiters\, required. Water purification tablets\, a headlamp with new batteries\, first aid kit\, tensor bandage\, and emergency silver blanket are recommended in case things don’t go to plan. Extra socks and plastic bags for your boots are also useful. A water bladder you can drink while you hike\, plus a backup water bottle is ideal. \nPlease read the slow and steady waiver and code of conduct in advance. You will sign in agreeing to the conditions of the waiver at the trailhead and leave an emergency contact name and number. You agree to follow slow and steady policies\, listen to the organizer\, treat everyone with respect\, do your own research on the hikes\, come prepared\, and recognize that your organizers are volunteers who put in a lot of their own time to plan and lead these hikes for you.

SUMMARY:Slocan Lake /Valhalla Prov Park(paddle & hike)
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**Slocan Lake** **Paddle/hike-update on launching on the waters**\n**Departure from home base:** As deemed necessary\, to be able to start **paddling on 5th Aug\, from the south end of Slocan Lake.** \nPreference will be given to those with whom I have paddled in the past or those who have multi day kayaking/canoeing experience\n**Potential participants:** Please answer the questions\, else you will remain in the waiting list \n**DESCRIPTION:**\nSlocan Lake is about 40km long\, at its widest part near New Denver and Silverton almost 2km wide and over 300m deep. The average depth is 171 m. The lake is fed by Bonanza Creek\, which comes down the pass from Summit Lake\, beyond which is the town of Nakusp on Upper Arrow Lake. Paddling length 40 km. width 2.7 km max. It is drained by the Slocan River\, which flows south from the lake’s foot at Slocan City through the Slocan Valley to the Kootenay River a few miles above its confluence with the Columbia.\nThe Slocan Lake is embedded by the high ranges of the Valhalla Mountains to the west and the Selkirk Mountains to the east. Dense rainforests cover the west shore slopes from valley bottom to the timberline. The landscape along the west bank changes between smooth round rocks covered with moss\, sandy beaches\, impermeable forest and the estuaries of the creeks. High in the alpine region springs feed numerous creeks\, which caved their way down in millions of years. The water created deep canyons and gorges with impressive waterfalls and flows year-round. Lake fish like the cold clear fresh creek water and fishermen know that the creek mouths are a good spot to fish.\nThe Valhalla shore of the lake offers many wonderfully located wilderness campgrounds with picnic tables\, outhouses and bear proof storage containers for food. Here are also starting points of trails which lead high up into Valhalla Park.\n**Group event:** We follow S&S Hikers’ club rules; the organizer/s are volunteers; hence participants are joining the event at their own risk.\n**Rules/regulations**: We follow the itinerary including hiking trips from the camp ground; absolutely no straying alone on the waters or in the bush\n**Refundable deposit of $ 100 by e transfer.** This will be handed back to you in cash at the boat launch\n**Health concerns**: please let the team know about your medication/emergency contact and where exactly you are carrying them\n**Closed camp sites: Wee Sandy Beach/Sharp Creek Camp site/ Nemo Creek:** These sites have been cleared of burnt and damaged trees; they may be open by the time we start our paddle\n**Gear and food arrangement**: We shall firm up these items during the final meeting\n**Payment for rental:** Directly to Smiling Otters (please refer below for rental rates)\n**Guests:** I have two experience paddlers with me as guests\n**Carpooling/departure: location TBD\, including cost**\n**Carparking:** At Smiling Otters\, free of cost\n**Onshore emergency contact in addition to 911**: Smiling Otters Owner has agreed to be our contact during the trip duration\, if he is in town\n**Itinerary**\n**Day 1 Aug 4( Travel Day )**: Leave Calgary/Cochrane/Edmonton as deemed necessary to reach Reach Slocan City (about 591 km from Calgary)\, and stay in a hotel\, Airbnb\, BnB or Springer Creek RV camp site ($ 25 plus GST for tenting sites 19-35)\n**Day 2 Aug 5**: **17.5 Km Paddle**: Dep 7.30 am latest: Paddle from Slocan Beach Boat launch to Cory’s Ranch Camp site; couple of creeks to soak ourselves. Camp at Cory’s Camp site (in case there are weather issues\, we can camp at in between at Ben Brown’s camp site or at Mossy Point/Indian Point)\n**Day 3 Aug 6 19-20 Km Paddle**: Dep 730 am or earlier; paddle to Wragge Beach Campground; pitch tents at *Wragge Beach camp site*\n**Day 4 Aug 7 10 Km Paddle to Bonanza Creek and hike** : Wragge Beach camp site night halt : Relaxed day\, paddle to Bonanza Creek mouth; return trip of 10 Km \, explore Wragge Creek (we hike as much as we can\, along a rugged Forest Service Road\, utilizing an old\, overgrown logging road and creek crossings that leads to the remote fishing Wragge Lake lake( 3-4 hour one way 14 Km). The view of Mt Vingolf is stunning.\n***Return Trip***\n**Day 5 Aug 8**: Wragge Beach- Sandy Point camp ground\, 13-14 km (in between sites at Wee Sandy and Nemo are closed due to wildfire of 2024); we can hike up\, as much as we can (my suggestion is 8 km return max\, because the trail is steep and the final elevation is 1900 metres); to get a View of New Denver Glacier.\n**Day 6 Aug 9:**\nSandy Point – South Evans Beach camp site 17-18 km\, pitch tent.\n**Day 7 Aug 10 Total hike 22 km return**: leave early: Hike to Emerald Lake (approx. 4 km\, 500 m elevation\, first 1.5 km is a steep hike); then to Cahill Lake (3.5 km\, 215 m elevation gain) and then to Beatrice Lake (2.5 km\, 215 m elevation gain); South Evans Beach camp night halt\n**Day 8 Aug 11**\n**Paddle from South Evans Beach Campsite- Slocan Beach boat launch (7 km)**; pack up and\n**ALT 1 Head home** (Calgary/Edmonton/Cochrane)\n**ALT 2** (2 days’ trip)\n-travel to New Denver\, the site of a Japanese concentration camp in WW2 and also as the site for forced residential school enrollment for Doukhobor children in the 1950s. Continue to Nelson(approx. 100 km) stay over night.\n-Nelson-Castlegaar-Trail-Creston-Cranbrook-Fernie -Calgary/Cochrane ( 683 km \, can be done with an extra day )\nMost of the complied information is from public domain\, [https://www.smilingotter.com/](https://www.smilingotter.com/) (a local rental outfit in Slocan)\n**Main points to note**\n1. Emergency services are through RCMP; there is a Search & Rescue Team in New Denver who will come to rescue in case of emergency\n3. There are few large bays\, numerous small coves provide shelter. We can easily find safe places to pull onto the shore in most areas during severe weather condition and change/tweak our paddling plan\, based on weather conditions\n4. Camp sites-Out of the 8 campsites on Slocan Lake\, all of which are open to the public\, Wee Sandy\, Sharp Creek and Nemo Creek are closed \n* The six campsites in Valhalla Provincial Park (west side) are free and first-come\, first-served.\n– Wragge Beach is a BC Recreation site with a small fee\, while Bannock Point is a free BC Recreation site.\n-All camp sites offer picnic tables and pit toilets and close to each other.
