DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**What we’ll do**\n**This is an invitation to Slow and Steady members to join me on Tuesday evenings for a 5-8 km urban walk exploring the Okotoks Trail system. The riverside trails are beautiful and deer are frequently sighted during our evening walks. The walks start at 6:00 pm. We will wait up to 5 minutes at the meet up location in case of traffic. Please call me at 780-237-5933 if you are lost or have a last minute cancellation. Please do not send a meetup message – I don’t get notifications off wifi.** \n**Attendance can be at the organizer’s discretion.** \n**Please note that we all walk at different paces\, however we strive to stay together and enjoy each others company. If you wish to walk very quickly this walk may not be for you. We love to stop for “Kodak” moments periodically as the ever changing weather/seasons provide memorable moments.** \n**Summary:**\n**Event host will pick the route each week dependent on weather and trail conditions. In the past we have taken different routes (i.e. walked the River trails; through town; around the dog park and Drake Landing pond etc…..) DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nAs a change of pace\, I’m going to do a very short\, easy\, last minute hike to big hill springs. It is a beautiful well used trail past creeks\, rock formations\, waterfalls\, and is a photographers paradise. We may play a bit in the creek\, so water shoes (in your pack) are recommended. We may go a bit off trail. \nThe trail is found between Calgary and Cochrane on the on Big Hill Springs road\, just off Hwy 1A (near Glenbow Ranch)\, 15 minutes NE of Cochrane. \nIt is short\, between 1.6 and 1.8km\, depending on the route. However\, due to this\, we will sleep in\, start at 1pm\, and add a stop at the Famous MacKays Ice Cream in Cochrane\, with an optional tour of the pretty shops on main street Cochrane. Kitchen store\, gift stores\, crystals\, beautiful used book store with coffee shop\, and much more. \nBeginners welcome. Meet in the Big Hill Springs Parking lot at 12:45pm\, ready to hike at 1pm. See map. Recommended gas fee\, 10 from NW Calgary\, 15 from the rest of Calgary. You will be home in time for supper this time. \nOn my hikes\, we take 8-12 experienced hikers. We do not run ahead or leave people behind. We are out to enjoy nature together\, get to know each other better\, and keep each other safe. If you run ahead of the group\, we will feed you to the bears. \nWear hiking boots\, bring water\, first aid kit. Money for ice cream. Poles and water shoes recommended. The weather is excellent\, mild winds.\nPlan on paddling all around the lake including heading into Weaselhead\, depending on the current going upstream. It’s about a 18 km paddle. If anyone wants to stay out longer\, please feel free to do so.\nYou are all responsible for your own safety and safety gear. Conditions can change quickly so dress accordingly.\nMake sure you have the following mandatory safety equipment: \n1. Coast Guard approved PFD\n2. Sound signaling device\n3. DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nI love this spring hike right after it opens. We will do a relaxed pace hike to Chester Lake along the wide trail\, then the Elephant Rocks\, and two of the three lakes beyond. Hopefully\, there will still be water in the second and third lakes this time of year. We will walk as far as we feel comfortable\, possibly all the way to the last lake. It may be a long day. Bring lots of water and bear spray. We’ll eat lunch at one of the lakes. It is very beautiful and we are likely to see Marmots. \nWe will meet at the Chester Lake parking lot at 10am\, ready to hike. I have had a lot of people arriving late over the past few events\, so we will not be able to wait if you are late. Hike starts by 10:05am. Please plan ahead. This will be a long relaxed day\, please don’t make evening plans. \nIf you choose to make your own carpooling plans once you are accepted on the hike. Recommended $25 gas fee. Drivers need a valid Kananaskis Park Pass and a vehicle that can drive on the Smith Dorrien gravel road. I can take 3 people from the Petro Canada at hwy 22 and 1. \nThere is a wait list for this event. I will take a maximum of 12 people on this hike. \nDistance: Up to 13.7km (if we go to 3rd lake)\nElevation: Up to 649m (if we go to 3rd lake) \nWill likely only go to first one or two lakes past Chester\, but prepared for a long day. \nAll participants must sign at the trailhead agreeing to the Slow and Steady waiver and code of conduct. The trail starts with a gentle incline through the forest. Once you get higher up the views really open up! You then follow the ridgeline to the base of the mountain. This final few hundred meters does have a little exposure. DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\nThere is no closure per Parks Canada\, at the time of posting.\nMEETING AT TRAIL HEAD 900 am\, Cave and Basin National Historic site parking lot. Departure 915 am from the Parking lot(no parking fees )\nThe Sulphur Mountain via Cosmic Ray Road is a 13.0 kilometer (907 m elevation gain) sparsely trafficked trail located near Banff\, with astounding views of the Bow River Valley. The hike is a steady rise\, but continuously blessed by a cool breeze. Upon reaching the Sanson peak\, we find a plaque commemorating the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station National Historic Site (the station was constructed in 1957 to study cosmic rays\, and dismantled in 1981). A weather observatory /station stands in place. One can enjoy the 0.5 km boardwalk along the ridge ending at the Gondola stn. DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Hikers\n**What we’ll do**\n**This is an invitation to Slow and Steady members to join me on Tuesday evenings for a 5-8 km urban walk exploring the Okotoks Trail system. The riverside trails are beautiful and deer are frequently sighted during our evening walks. The walks start at 6:00 pm. We will wait up to 5 minutes at the meet up location in case of traffic. Please call me at 780-237-5933 if you are lost or have a last minute cancellation. Please do not send a meetup message – I don’t get notifications off wifi.** \n**Attendance can be at the organizer’s discretion.** \n**Please note that we all walk at different paces\, however we strive to stay together and enjoy each others company. If you wish to walk very quickly this walk may not be for you. We love to stop for “Kodak” moments periodically as the ever changing weather/seasons provide memorable moments.** \n**Summary:**\n**Event host will pick the route each week dependent on weather and trail conditions. In the past we have taken different routes (i.e. walked the River trails; through town; around the dog park and Drake Landing pond etc…..) Smile\n2. Bear spray in an accessible position\, on the handlebar.\n3. Water spiked with hydralite /eqv tablets\n4. WHISTLE\n5. Must remain in visual contact\n6. Bikes: road bike\, or hybrid\, also MTB or electric bikes\n7. Appropriate layers for current season\n8. First aid kit\n9. Biking Kit (Tools\, extra tube\, pump ..)\n10. Helmets are mandatory\, no exceptions \nWe will ride in group\, speed demons are grudgingly acceptable \, we will wait periodically for the slowest ones. We shall make best efforts to stay in visual/audio contact. We shall go through Banff and continue towards Highway 1A (Bow Valley Park way across the Highway overpass to get good views of the Bow). We shall continue to Johnston Canyon ; lots of photo opportunities \nDistance: slightly less than 105 Km round trip.\nDuration: No rush to return to cow town\nElevation: a bit on Highway 1A; but we can walk that section together\nPhysical Difficulty: Intermediate\nEvent Pace: Will stop to take breaks when needed. \nSuggested Gear: Camera \nCAR POOLING: please communicate directly or thru COMMENTS section \nThose who want to earn their calories back; they are free to visit the watering holes of Banff.
