Big Hill Springs Hike plus Ice Cream – Beginners welcome
Slow and Steady Hikers
As a change of pace, I’m going to do a very short, easy, last minute hike to big hill springs. It is a beautiful well used trail past creeks, rock formations, waterfalls, and is a photographers paradise. We may play a bit in the creek, so water shoes (in your pack) are recommended. We may go a bit off trail.
The trail is found between Calgary and Cochrane on the on Big Hill Springs road, just off Hwy 1A (near Glenbow Ranch), 15 minutes NE of Cochrane.
It is short, between 1.6 and 1.8km, depending on the route. However, due to this, we will sleep in, start at 1pm, and add a stop at the Famous MacKays Ice Cream in Cochrane, with an optional tour of the pretty shops on main street Cochrane. Kitchen store, gift stores, crystals, beautiful used book store with coffee shop, and much more.
Beginners welcome. Meet in the Big Hill Springs Parking lot at 12:45pm, ready to hike at 1pm. See map. Recommended gas fee, 10 from NW Calgary, 15 from the rest of Calgary. You will be home in time for supper this time.
On my hikes, we take 8-12 experienced hikers. We do not run ahead or leave people behind. We are out to enjoy nature together, get to know each other better, and keep each other safe. If you run ahead of the group, we will feed you to the bears.
Wear hiking boots, bring water, first aid kit. Money for ice cream. Poles and water shoes recommended. Eat lunch before arriving.
Please read the slow and steady waiver and code of conduct in advance. You will sign in agreeing to the conditions of the waiver at the trailhead and leave an emergency contact name and number. You agree to follow slow and steady policies, listen to the organizer, treat everyone with respect, do your own research on the hikes, come prepared, and recognize that your organizers are volunteers who put in a lot of their own time to plan and lead these hikes for you.
